Why Is the Ortho-Ortho Isomer Important in EDDHA?

EDDHA can exist in different isomeric forms. Among these, the ortho-ortho (o,o) isomer is one of the most important forms for maintaining iron stability in the soil.

The ortho-ortho isomer forms a strong complex with iron, helping maintain iron in a more stable and plant-available form, particularly under high-pH and calcareous soil conditions.

Therefore, when evaluating EDDHA products, looking only at the “6% Fe” specification is not sufficient. The ortho-ortho isomer level is an important quality parameter when assessing the potential performance of an EDDHA product under high-pH and calcareous conditions.

How Does the Ortho-Ortho Level Affect Performance?

In general, a higher ortho-ortho level is associated with a greater capacity of EDDHA to maintain iron stability, particularly in alkaline and calcareous soils.

These values should not be considered the sole criteria for determining product performance. The total EDDHA content, actual ortho-ortho isomer level, product formulation and physical form, application rate, soil pH, active lime, organic matter, and the plant’s iron requirements should all be evaluated together.

This comprehensive approach provides a more accurate assessment of EDDHA-chelated iron quality and suitability for different soil conditions.
